Antarctic Law and Polar Management Institute

About the Institute

The polar regions play a very important role for our planet. The consequences of climate change are becoming alarmingly visible and have global repercussions, affecting not only their own ecosystems, but also global ocean and atmospheric circulation. Shrinking ice caps contribute to sea level rise, so entire coastal cities could disappear under water. This would lead to migrations and economic destabilization, in addition to the ecosystemic alteration and the planetary biological balance. To this we must add the outcrop of diseases, which are contained in them and the change in salinity in the water, which directly interferes with sea currents. This not only affects marine ecosystems, but also the global climate. In sum, the study, treatment and follow-up of the picture of the polar situation is essential, given that their affectation will inevitably change the planet and therefore the lives of all of us who inhabit it.

Our Institute promotes the analysis of the current legal regime in the polar ice caps of the planet, of the cooperation in the Antarctic continent in light of the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, its application, its antecedents and the Conventions and recommendations that complement it and its application, with emphasis on the study, highlighting and dissemination of management and logistics procedures, essential for the development of any Antarctic activity. Aspects related to the fishing regime in the southern seas, the efforts made to regulate potential mineral exploitation and environmental protection at both ends of the globe are studied.
